Warning: Email misusing the names of Nicholas Freeman and Freeman & Co Solicitors

An email has been sent falsely claiming to be from Nicholas Freeman of Freeman & Co Solicitors.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that an email has been sent to a member of the public, falsely claiming to be from Nicholas Freeman of Freeman & Co Solicitors.

The email seen by the SRA was sent from the email address of nickfreeman.solicitors@minister.com and gave the telephone number of a genuine firm of solicitors (see below). 

The SRA has been advised that the email banner at the bottom of the email linked to the website of a genuine firm of solicitors (see below).

Any business or transactions through the email address nickfreeman.solicitors@minister.com is not undertaken by a solicitor’s firm authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

Freeman & Co Solicitors is a genuine firm which is authorised and regulated by the SRA and Nicholas Freeman is a genuine solicitor who is authorised and regulated by the SRA and is the director of the genuine firm.

The telephone number for the genuine firm is 0161 236 7007. Genuine emails from the genuine firm end in the email address of “@freemansols.com”.

Both the genuine Nicholas Freeman and the genuine firm confirm that they have no connection to the email referred to above

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
