Keeping of the Roll – not until 2018

You might remember that, last year, we announced we would no longer be carrying out the Keeping of the Roll exercise as an annual event. (See SRA Update Issue 49.)

The exercise required solicitors who do not hold a practising certificate to apply online to keep their name on the Roll of Solicitors. We abolished it as a yearly event as part of our commitment to removing unnecessary bureaucracy.

When we consulted on the issue, most who responded agreed that the exercise was a burden, did not add regulatory value and was not cost effective. So we will conduct the exercise only when we consider it necessary to verify our data.

A number of you have asked when the next exercise will be. There will be no Keeping of the Roll exercise until at least 2018. You therefore do not need to do anything to remain on the Roll.

When we do carry out the exercise, we will let you know, including through SRA Update, so keep reading!

To make sure you get this message, it is essential that you keep your mySRA profile up to date, including contact details. This will also help keep the Roll of Solicitors accurate, and ensure the Law Society membership body has the correct contact details to send you their communications too.

You can request that your name be removed from, or restored to, the Roll of Solicitors using mySRA.

If you need help accessing or updating your mySRA account or have any queries, please contact us or download a user guide.
