Warning: Documents misusing the name Yasmeen Ghali and from 'Law Office UK Limited'

17 November 2022

Documents have been sent misusing the name of 'Yasmeen Ghali' and from 'Law Office UK Limited'

What is the scam?

A member of the public has received documents from an individual using the name 'Yasmeen Ghali'.  We are informed that this person claimed to be a lawyer at 'Law Office UK Limited', supposedly offering legal assistance to try to recover some lost investment funds.

The document from 'Law Office UK Limited' provides a postal address of '90 Worship, London E85 5HQ', but uses a name that is very similar to the name of a genuine firm of solicitors based in Leeds (see below).

The recipient was also sent a purported identity card for 'Yasmeen Ghali' from the 'United Kingdom British Law Association'. This document misuses the name of a genuine solicitor (see below).

We have been informed that the contact numbers of '+44 7704 375613' and '441206 636572' were also used.

Any business or transaction through the contact details above, are not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a firm of solicitors called Law Offices UK Limited (which also trades as Wilsons Solicitors), and whose head office is based at 52 Town Street, Farsley, Leeds LS28 5LD. The firm’s head office telephone number is 0113 236 2333.

The SRA also authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Yasmeen Ghali (SRA ID: 531108). Miss Ghali is not employed by Law Offices UK Limited.

The genuine firm of Law Offices UK Limited, and the genuine Yasmeen Ghali, have confirmed they do not have any connection to the documents referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
