Warning: Email misusing the name of TLW Solicitors

An email has been sent misusing the name of TLW Solicitors in relation to a cryptocurrency matter.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been notified that a member of the public was contacted by 'Nicola Wilson' of TLW Solicitors. The correspondence purports to be from the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets and discusses how they can assist in the recovery of cryptocurrencies.

The email was sent from 'agent505@tlwsolicitors.net'.

The email misuses the name of a genuine firm of solicitors (see below).

Any business or transaction through the email address of 'agent505@tlwsolicitors.net' is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called TLW Solicitors. The genuine firm uses the domain @tlwsolicitors.co.uk.

The genuine firm TLW Solicitors has confirmed that it does not have any genuine and intended connection to the scam referred to above. The genuine firm has also confirmed that it does not employ nor have any connection to an individual called 'Nicola Wilson'.

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Nicola Wilson whose SRA number is 360016. The genuine Nicola Wilson is not thought to have any genuine and intended connection to the scam referred to above.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
