Warning: Emails misusing the name of Adam Cohen and Adco Legal Limited

10 July 2024

Emails have been sent misusing the name of Adam Cohen and Adco Legal Limited and purporting to contain a link to a file on Dropbox.

What is the scam?

The SRA has seen emails falsely claiming to be from Adam Cohen. Sone of the emails have the subject heading 'Adam Cohen shared 'Adco Legal Ltd.pdf'.

The emails purportedly invite the recipient to view a pdf file on Dropbox. A concern is that the link may contain malware.

Some of the emails appear to have been sent from adamc@adcolegal.co.uk or 'AdamCohen via Dropbox' and give the email address 'no-reply@dropbox.com'.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates two genuine solicitors called Adam Cohen, one of whom is the director of Adco Legal Limited, a firm authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Both genuine solicitors called Adam Cohen have confirmed that they have no connection to the emails referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
