Standards and Regulations

What we are trying to do

We want to provide the profession with information to help them understand and prepare for the introduction of our new Standards and Regulations from 25 November 2019.

Who needs to know

Everyone we regulate or may potentially regulate, and everyone working for an SRA regulated law firm.

What's going on

Our new Standards and Regulations will come into effect on 25 November 2019.

Shorter and more targeted than the previous SRA Handbook, the new SRA Standards and Regulations focus on what really matters – the issues most important to protecting the public and their money.

The new regulations are supported by our:

Enforcement Strategy (revised in 2019) - which provides greater clarity on the regulator's approach in cases of potential misconduct.

Transparency Rules (2018) – which require regulated firms to publish information online about their complaints procedures and prices, as well as requiring them to display the SRA's digital badge.

We are continuing to develop an online version of the new Standards and Regulation. This is currently in a beta (development) phase. To access the beta version, please register to participate and give us your feedback on the experience.

A full version of the new regulations is also available in PDF format.

Support materials

In the run-up to the new standards and regulations being introduced we will be publishing a suite of guidance and support materials, designed to help you better understand any areas of significant change compared to our existing rules, or areas of new opportunities.

Further guidance and support materials will be published over the coming months.
