Scam alerts – police your identity

We routinely issues alerts when we receive information about potential scams involving bogus law firms.

Con artists attempt to convince unsuspecting members of the public that they are a genuine solicitors firm in a bid to extract personal information. The scams either attempt to use the identity of an existing solicitor or firm, albeit with different contact information, or try to appear as if they are a genuine, perhaps with a fake website.

In the first quarter of 2023/24 we dealt with 83 such alerts. These included phone calls from those pretending to be law firms, spoofed/copied firm websites and inheritance scams. You can find out more on our scams round-up page, which looks at some of the most recent trends we have seen.

You can play a part in protecting your own identity, for example by regularly looking for your firm name on a search engine.

Policing such scams does not fall within our remit. This is criminal activity and is dealt with by relevant national police services and departments, such as Action Fraud.
