Equality and diversity

Upholding Professional Standards – Diversity Monitoring, Supporting Report - Corporate reporting

We take our commitment to supporting equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) very seriously.

Our work since the ICCR on the profile of solicitors in our enforcement work

There is a longstanding overrepresentation of certain groups – men and people from a black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) background – in our enforcement processes, as is widely seen across many regulators and sectors.

SQE: monitoring and maximising diversity

The Bridge Group – research experts on diversity and social equality – independent report into the diversity implications of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination.

Our work to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in the profession – five year summary

How we have delivered a significant programme of work on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) over the last five years.

Promoting disability inclusion in law firms – setting out good practice

This work sets out disability inclusive measures that law firms can put in place for employees, clients and others they deal with in the course of their work.

Reasonable adjustments in the provision of legal services

We commissioned YouGov to explore what reasonable adjustments law firms could offer to make sure their services are more accessible for disabled people. As part of this they surveyed more than 3,500 disabled people through a combination of online surveys, one-to-one interviews and online forums. A workshop was also held with a number of local and national charities.

Upholding professional standards 2017/2018 - Corporate reporting

Our Upholding Professional Standards report sets out information about how complaints are handled, how we conduct investigations, and how we decide whether and what sort of regulatory action is necessary.

Mapping advantages and disadvantages: Diversity in the legal profession in England and Wales

We commissioned independent quantitative research on solicitor career progression and how it is influenced by gender and ethnicity.

Unlocking the benefits of diversity

We wanted to understand what is being done, and what can be done, to improve the representation of female and black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) solicitors in senior roles such as partners or directors.

Introduction of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination: Monitoring and Maximising Diversity

This report, prepared by policy association the Bridge Group, considers how the SRA could monitor the impact of the SQE on candidates with protected characteristics and on those from lower socioeconomic groups through data collation and analysis. It also recommends steps the SRA could take to maximise the positive impact of the SQE on diversity.
